Oct. 4-5, Point Lookout
Travel with us to Point Lookout State Park, the southernmost point in Maryland where we will capture and tag Monarch Butterflies as they make their journey south to Mexico. Park naturalists will provide us with an interpretive program about the natural history and plight of this most fascinating butterfly. We will then visit the park’s butterfly gardens to capture and tag the adults found there. Point Lookout is a natural funnel for migrating butterflies where they congregate in large numbers to refuel before making the flight across the Potomac River. Additionally, we will help the park’s butterfly garden by planting milkweed seeds.
Price: $32 per person
Price includes 1 night camping at Point Lookout, 2 naturalist led programs, and milkweed planting supplies. Meals will be on your own.
The weekend includes an optional Smith Island boat trip Saturday morning for an additional $45 per person. We will board a charter boat to the remote Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay, where we will visit the Smith Island Cultural Museum, tour the island and have lunch complete with the renowned “Smith Island Cake,” Maryland’s official desert.
